Unity Sand Ceremony
The Unity Sand Ceremony is an alternative to the popular "unity candle ceremony" incorporated into many of today's weddings, especially beach weddings. The essence is to symbolize the union of "two into one." This sand version is not only beautiful and interesting, but also more appropriate for an outdoor setting. that can be sometimes windy. A couple may also choose to perform an intimate sand blending on their first and or subsequent wedding anniversary celebrations.
There are different sand ceremony choices:
1) The Couple's Ceremony (bride and groom only)
2) The Parents' Ceremony (parents of the bride and groom are included)
3) The Family's (Children) Ceremony (children from previous unions are included)
Bride and Groom only. Cylinders or vases are used; one for the Bride, one for the Groom, each one containing their chosen color or sand, and an empty center container for them each to pour their sand into. The comingling of the colored sand represents the joining of the Bride and Groom. The central container is theirs to keep.
Couple and Family. Children or parents are often invited to take part as well. The mixing of the various sand colors is a fitting way to symbolize the new Blended Family that will result from this union, the uniting of the two families into one. The sand is generally poured into a central vase or vile and can follow different orders:
Mother & Father together
Children together
Children, Mother & Father together
or
Officient (pours neutral color sand first, representing the couple's strong foundation or spiritual foundation)
Bride & Groom together
